Album Review

Senses Fail continue to explore the three-way intersection between post-hardcore, screamo, and punk-pop with their third LP. Musically and lyrically, Life Is Not a Waiting Room furthers the dichotomies that helped fuel the band's previous work: heaven and hell, muscle and melody, depression and emotional uplift. There's also a good deal of harmony here, from the dual guitar solos of Garrett Zablocki and Heath Saraceno to the band's use of vocal harmonies. While Senses Fail have always resisted the urge to tone down their hardcore tendencies in favor of a more commercial approach, Life Is Not a Waiting Room still features some surprisingly melodic moments, from "Yellow Angels" — a ballad that concludes with fist-pumping gang vocals — to the anthemic "Garden State." The band draws parallels to Further Seems Forever during such moments, where they flaunt their pop-inflected songwriting skills without losing the might that fuels the group's harder songs. Longtime listeners can rest assured that those harder songs haven't been left behind, as tracks like "Lungs Like Gallows" and "Wolves at the Door" find room for rusty-throated screams and double kickdrum thunder. Nonetheless, the band shows the bulk of its growth when melody is emphasized.

New Sound Isn't Always A Bad Thing

This Cd has a bit more "pop" than their previous stuff, but hits hard with "Lungs Like Gallows, Ali For Cody, and Wolves At The Door."
I could see 4 very popular radio singles with "Family Tradition, Garden State, Map The Streets, and Hair of The Dog."
They also have "Fireworks at Dawn", which is epic with the drumming (but is a bit short in my opinion), and "Yellow Angels" which is a type of song like "The Priest and The Matador" off of Still Searching.

Does this live up to Still Searching? Thats a tough one, but this is definately amazing on a whole different level.
Great buy! 5 Stars!

Go Back To Old

Senses Fail is one of my favorite bands but still searching wasn't that good and this cd is just bad. I guess I was just spoiled with Let It Enfold You, one of the best cds by any band. There old stuff is totally different from this stuff and so much more edgier. It just seems like their focused on making it mainstream than making good music.

Absurd - Amazing!

I thought Still Searching was one of the most amazing album I've ever heard and Life Is Not A Waiting Room was the perfect next step. The sound has evolved but I personally like when the sound is polished. I'm reading other reviews that say LINAWR is a step towards mainstream but I don't think they quite understand the definition of mainstream. If you played "Wolves At The Door", "Ali for Cody" or "Lungs Like Gallows" on the radio, people would probably cry. Songs like "Garden State" and "Family Tradition" probably resemble Still Searching more than any of the other tracks (I think of "Calling All Cars" and "Can't Be Saved"). Maybe "Yellow Angels" resembles the same eerie yet calming feel of "Priest and the Matador". I do not see this album as a step toward mainstream. Senses Fail still maintains its own sound, the same morbidly emo lyrics of the past two albums (since Let It Enfold You, the delivery has certainly changed to be less childlishly clever and just flat out darker) while still showing that they have grown.

If Senses Fail is going 'mainstream' then I would be thrilled because I have never heard anything like this on the radio and I would love to.

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s

Comprised of vocalist James "Buddy" Nielsen, guitarists Dave Miller and Garrett Zablocki, bassist Michael Glita (former percussionist for Tokyo Rose), and drummer Dan Trapp, the New Jersey outfit Senses Fail developed a slick amalgam of post-hardcore chuggery and emo heartbreak that recalled such fellow New Jersey-based groups as Saves the Day. Formed in 2002 in Bergen County, Senses Fail quickly issued a debut EP and began gigging regularly while maintaining a thriving Internet presence. Drive-Thru...
